A devastating Multi-vehicle collision near Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two women from the same family. The incident, which involved a head-on collision and a subsequent secondary impact, has left several others injured and highlighted the perils of highway travel.
The Victims and the Journey
The primary victims were identified as Felicia (30) and her mother-in-law, Sumathi. Felicia was the wife of Tamilmani (34); the couple, originally from Sattur and Tirupur respectively, resided in Chennai with their two young children.
The family had traveled to the spiritual hub of Rameswaram on Saturday for a planned pilgrimage with relatives. After completing their visit, the group began their return journey toward Sattur on Sunday, traveling in a small convoy consisting of a car and a van.
Sequence of the Accident
The Multi-vehicle collision unfolded at Kunjar Valasai, located near Mandapam. According to police reports, the sequence of events was triggered by a two-wheeler carrying three passengers.
- Initial Impact: The two-wheeler collided head-on with the car driven by Tamilmani.
- Secondary Collision: The force of the initial crash caused Tamilmani to lose control of the vehicle. His car veered into the path of an oncoming van traveling in the opposite direction.
- Fatal Consequences: The double impact proved catastrophic. Felicia and Sumathi sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. An unidentified man riding the two-wheeler also succumbed to his injuries.
Casualties and Investigation
While three lives were lost, several others narrowly escaped death. Tamilmani and his two children sustained various injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
The physical evidence of the crash was stark; the car, the van, and the two-wheeler all suffered extensive structural damage, leaving the roadway littered with debris. The Mandapam police arrived shortly after the incident to secure the area and have since registered a formal case.
Authorities are currently conducting a further investigation to determine the exact speed of the vehicles involved and whether other environmental factors contributed to the crash. For now, a family’s weekend of devotion has ended in an unimaginable period of mourning.
