🚑 Government Scheme for Free Road Accident Treatment in India
The Indian Government has officially launched a pan-India scheme to offer free cashless treatment for road accident victims. Under this initiative, emergency medical expenses up to ₹1.5 lakh will be covered for the first seven days following an accident.
This nationwide policy comes in response to a Supreme Court directive, pushing the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to implement a delayed provision from the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, 2019.
🔍 Key Features of the Cashless Road Accident Scheme
- Any person injured in a motor vehicle accident on any road in India is eligible for free treatment.
- Started as a pilot in four states and two union territories, the scheme is now expanded across India.
- 30,000+ Empanelled Hospitals listed under the National Health Authority (NHA) are part of the scheme and must provide trauma care.
- Referral & Transport Support: If a hospital lacks facilities, it must refer the patient and arrange transportation, while updating the online transfer portal.
- Real-Time Monitoring: A 17-member monitoring committee, including the Secretary of Road Transport, oversees the scheme’s implementation.
🩺 Why This Scheme Matters for Road Safety
- 🚨 50% of road fatalities in India could be prevented with timely medical attention, according to the Law Commission of India.
- ⏱️ The majority of deaths happen during the golden hour—the critical first hour after a crash.
- 💰 Victims often lack immediate funds, delaying critical care.
- 🤝 This scheme guarantees no one is denied treatment due to money, especially helping poor and BPL families.
- ❤️ It offers emotional and financial relief to families during emergencies, enhancing road safety and accountability.
🛡️ Final Thoughts: Drive Safe, Stay Safe
- 🚗 Road accidents are human-made and preventable with safe driving habits.
- ⚠️ Practice the 3 C’s: Care, Courtesy, and Caution.
- ❌ Avoid rash driving, over-speeding, and reckless behavior on road.
- 🛠️ This scheme acts as a safety net, but prevention is the best protection.
