A heart-wrenching accident in Malappuram has claimed the lives of a young couple, leaving the local community in deep sorrow. The couple, who had been married for less than a year, died when their motorcycle was hit by a speeding car on the Puthanathani–Thirunavaya road near Ananthavoor Iqbal Nagar on Tuesday.
The Tragic Incident
The deceased have been identified as Valiya Peediyekkal Muhammad Sidheeq (28) and his wife Reesha Mansoor (25), both residents of Iqbal Nagar. According to police reports, the couple was on their way to work when a car coming from the opposite direction collided head-on with their motorcycle.
Sidheeq, who worked as a teacher at Pang Government Higher Secondary School, died instantly, while Reesha, a pharmacist at Peruvallur Government Homoeopathic Dispensary, succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital in Puthanathani.
The couple had tied the knot only in January this year, making the tragedy even more painful for their families and colleagues.
The Aftermath
Following the incident, Kalpakanchery Police conducted an inquest. After the postmortem examination at Manjeri Government Medical College Hospital, the bodies were laid to rest in the evening amid emotional scenes attended by relatives, friends, and students.
Sidheeq is survived by his parents Ahammadkutty and Muneera Banu, and his sister Sithara. Reesha leaves behind her parents Mattil Mansoor and Hafsath Chempakath.
Probable Causes of the Accident
While official reports are pending, early indications suggest the following possible causes:
- Overspeeding and loss of control by the car driver.
- Narrow road space and poor traffic regulation on the Puthanathani–Thirunavaya stretch.
- Insufficient road safety infrastructure, such as speed breakers or dividers, to prevent head-on collisions.
Road Safety: Lessons to Learn
This tragic incident underscores the pressing need to enhance road discipline and infrastructure in semi-urban regions like Malappuram. Preventive steps include:
- Strict speed monitoring and installation of speed cameras on high-risk stretches.
- Wider road shoulders and separate lanes for two-wheelers to ensure safety.
- Public awareness campaigns on cautious driving and helmet use.
- Immediate emergency response systems to save lives in the “golden hour” after a crash.
A Community in Mourning
The loss of a newly married, hardworking couple has shaken the Malappuram community. As families grieve, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder that one moment of recklessness can destroy many lives. Authorities must take urgent measures to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
