A late-night journey turned into a harrowing ordeal for passengers traveling from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh. In the early hours of the morning, a bus operated by the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) met with a serious accident while navigating the challenging terrain of a ghat road.
Incident Overview
The bus was en route from MV-79 in Odisha to Visakhapatnam when the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 AM. At the time of the accident, there were 31 individuals on board, including 29 passengers, the driver, and a staff member.
The quiet of the early morning was shattered as the vehicle veered off its intended path, prompting immediate action from local residents and emergency responders who rushed to the scene to assist the trapped and injured.
Mechanical Failure Suspected
While a formal investigation is still in its early stages, preliminary reports suggest a mechanical malfunction may be to blame. Initial findings indicate that the bus steering reportedly locked as the driver was attempting to negotiate a difficult turn.
The Incident Details: Sources indicate the bus was descending a steep ghat road and attempting a U-turn when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
Authorities have been quick to note that while the “steering lock” theory is a primary lead, the exact cause of the accident will only be confirmed following a comprehensive technical inspection by transport experts and a detailed police investigation.
Emergency Response and Medical Care
The impact of the crash resulted in varying degrees of injury among the passengers. Eight individuals sustained serious injuries and were immediately transported to a government hospital in Vizianagaram.
Serious Injuries: Eight passengers remain under close medical supervision.
Minor Injuries: Several passengers were treated for minor wounds and discharged after receiving primary care.
Onward Travel: Passengers who were fit to travel were assisted by the Andhra Pradesh Police and local volunteers to ensure they reached their destinations safely.
Initial records suggest that the majority, if not all, of the passengers involved in the accident are residents of Odisha.
Investigation and Next Steps
The Andhra Pradesh Police, in coordination with local authorities, have secured the accident site and initiated a formal inquiry. The focus of the investigation will be twofold: examining the mechanical integrity of the OSRTC vehicle and reviewing the road conditions at the time of the crash.
The OSRTC is expected to cooperate with the technical audit to determine if maintenance issues contributed to the steering failure. Officials have stated that further details will be released to the public as the investigation progresses and witness statements are recorded.
