A tragic road accident on Tuesday claimed the lives of two teenage students at Sripuriya Tiniali under Gaurisagar Police Station in Assam’s Sivasagar district, leaving the local community in shock and mourning. The fatal incident occurred on the Gaurisagar–Dikhoumukh connecting road at Borali when a scooter carrying the students met with a devastating collision.
Victims Identified as Higher Secondary Students
The deceased have been identified as 16-year-old Priyanuj Bora and Rinku Ranjan Dutta, both residents under the jurisdiction of Gaurisagar Police Station. According to reports, the two teenagers were first-year Higher Secondary students at Gaurisagar Junior College and were returning home after attending classes.
Family members, friends, and classmates described the boys as bright students with promising futures, making the loss even more heartbreaking for the community.
How the Accident Happened
As per preliminary reports, the students were travelling on a scooter along the Gaurisagar–Dikhoumukh road. While moving in the same direction, the scooter allegedly rammed into a motorcycle from behind.
The collision was severe enough to throw both riders off the scooter onto the road. One of the students died instantly at the accident site, while the other sustained critical injuries and was rushed toward a nearby medical facility. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Witnesses stated that the motorcycle involved in the crash fled the scene immediately after the incident, raising concerns about hit-and-run behaviour and road safety enforcement in the area.
Secondary Collision Damages Car
The impact did not end with the initial crash. Due to the force of the collision, the scooter reportedly skidded forward and crashed into a Swift Dzire car , damaging the front portion of the vehicle. Fortunately, no occupants of the car were reported injured.
Local residents quickly gathered at the accident spot and alerted authorities. Police personnel soon arrived, recovered the bodies, and initiated legal procedures.
Police Investigation Underway
The bodies of the deceased students were sent to Sibasagar Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Officials from Gaurisagar Police Station have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and to trace the motorcycle rider who allegedly fled the scene.
Authorities are examining eyewitness accounts and available evidence to establish whether overspeeding, negligence, or lack of road awareness contributed to the fatal mishap.
Rising Concern Over Road Safety
The incident once again highlights the growing number of road accidents involving young riders across India. Teenagers commuting daily for education often depend on two-wheelers, making them particularly vulnerable to serious injuries during collisions.
Experts stress that adherence to traffic rules and responsible driving behaviour can significantly reduce such tragedies. Community members have urged stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased awareness campaigns near educational institutions.
Important Road Safety Tips for Students and Riders
To prevent similar accidents, road safety experts recommend the following precautions:
- Always wear a certified helmet: Helmets significantly reduce the risk of fatal head injuries.
- Maintain safe distance: Avoid riding too close to vehicles ahead to allow reaction time.
- Follow speed limits: Overspeeding reduces control and increases accident severity.
- Avoid distractions: Do not use mobile phones or listen to loud music while riding.
- Use indicators and signals properly: Clear communication helps prevent sudden collisions.
- Stay alert at all times: Watch for unexpected movements from other vehicles.
- Ensure proper vehicle maintenance: Functional brakes, tyres, and lights are essential for safe riding.
A Community in Mourning
The untimely deaths of the two students have cast a pall of grief over Gaurisagar and nearby areas. Residents and college authorities expressed condolences to the bereaved families and appealed to young riders to prioritize safety over speed.
As investigations continue, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder that a moment of negligence on the road can lead to irreversible loss.
