Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway Crash Details
According to the Channapatna Traffic Police, the bus was carrying 43 individuals—36 passengers and seven staff members—at the time of the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest the vehicle was traveling at a high speed when the driver allegedly dozed off at the wheel.
The bus crashed into the metal fencing and dragged along it for approximately 100 meters. The impact was so severe that metal rods from the fence pierced through the left side of the vehicle, causing fatal injuries to those seated there.
Victims Identified
Authorities have identified the four deceased individuals:
- Mohammad Farhan (22) – Kozhikode, Kerala
- Sulfi Rafeez (45) – Kozhikode, Kerala
- Rasheed (45) – Kalasipalya, Bengaluru
- Sakir (27) – Anepalya, Bengaluru
Two other passengers, Abdul and Alain from Kannur, Kerala, are currently receiving medical care at a private hospital.
Driver Arrested for Negligence
The driver, identified as Riyaz, initially claimed the crash occurred while swerving to avoid an oncoming vehicle. However, CCTV footage reviewed by investigators tells a different story, indicating that driver fatigue was the primary cause.
“The driver stated he was trying to avoid another vehicle, but evidence indicates negligence due to feeling drowsy while driving,” stated a senior traffic police officer.
The Channapatna Traffic Police have registered a case of negligent driving and successfully taken the driver into custody. This incident highlights the growing concerns regarding road safety and driver fatigue on high-speed corridors like the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway.
Suggestion
Install fatigue-detection sensors in commercial vehicles to alert drivers the moment they show signs of drowsiness. Enforce mandatory rest breaks and limit consecutive driving hours to ensure operators remain alert during long trips. Upgrade expressway infrastructure with high-quality rumble strips and impact-absorbing barriers to prevent fatal roadside penetrations.
