A horrific road accident in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, has left at least 19 people dead and several others injured after a bus collided with a motorcycle and burst into flames. The incident occurred early Friday morning on a highway, sending shockwaves through the region.
The Cause of the Blaze
According to local authorities, the collision caused the motorcycle to become trapped beneath the bus. The impact ruptured the motorcycle’s fuel tank, triggering a massive explosion. The Bangalore-bound bus, which originated from Hyderabad, was carrying approximately 40 passengers at the time.
Senior police officer Koya Praveen confirmed that the fire spread with devastating speed. “The point of combustion was the fuel tank of the motorcycle,” Praveen stated, noting that the vehicle was completely gutted before firefighters could arrive.
Narrow Escapes and Investigation
The majority of passengers were asleep when the fire broke out. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as locals rushed to help passengers screaming for assistance. While some managed to flee through an emergency exit window, many were trapped.
The bus driver and cleaner reportedly fled the scene immediately following the crash. Authorities are currently conducting a formal inquiry centered on:
Potential fuel leakage, Negligent driving, Verification of the final death toll through DNA testing, as many bodies were burned beyond recognition.
India’s Road Safety Crisis
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her condolences on X (formerly Twitter), calling the event “unfortunate” and wishing for the speedy recovery of the survivors.
This tragedy highlights a persistent issue in India, which saw nearly 180,000 road fatalities last year, the highest globally. Experts point to speeding, reckless maneuvers, and a frequent disregard for safety regulations by bus operators as primary contributors to these recurring disasters.
Suggestion
Enforce strict speed limits and install collision-avoidance sensors to prevent high-impact crashes between vehicles. Implement fire-retardant materials and automatic suppression systems in buses to delay or stop fuel-triggered blazes. Ensure all drivers undergo rigorous safety training while mandating visible, easy-to-use emergency exits for quick evacuations.
