KARANJIA, ODISHA – A festive trip turned tragic early Tuesday morning. A speeding car hit an electric pole near Gidhibasa Chhaka on National Highway 220. The crash happened within Jashipur Police Station limits in Mayurbhanj. One person died and four others suffered critical injuries.
Deceased Identified; High-Speed Impact Reported
The victim has been identified as Saroj Mukhi, a resident of the Bhandaripokhari area. According to local sources, Mukhi died instantly due to the severity of the impact.
The group of five was reportedly returning home in a Maruti Alto after attending the ‘Dolamilana’ festivities in Karanjia. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle at a high speed, causing it to veer off the road and collide violently with a roadside electric pole.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
Local residents who witnessed the crash were the first to respond, immediately alerting the Jashipur Police and emergency medical services. The wreckage of the car was significantly damaged, requiring a swift rescue operation to extricate the four survivors trapped inside.
All four injured individuals were rushed to nearby medical facilities in critical condition. Due to the nature of their injuries, the victims have been distributed across several specialized centers:
One patient has been shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced trauma care. One patient is receiving treatment at the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital. Two others remain admitted to a local hospital in Karanjia, where their conditions are being monitored.
Police Investigation Underway
Officers from the Jashipur Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to secure the area and clear the mangled remains of the vehicle from the National Highway. A formal probe has been initiated to determine whether the accident was caused by mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or poor visibility during the early morning hours.
Road safety experts have frequently cited NH-220 as a high-risk zone during festive seasons due to increased traffic and late-night travel. The local community has expressed deep grief over the loss of life during what was meant to be a celebratory period.
The police have registered a case and are awaiting the post-mortem report of the deceased to conclude the initial phase of the investigation.
Suggeston
Drivers should always take adequate rest before traveling early mornings after late festivals to completely avoid dangerous highway driving fatigue. Authorities must install sturdy crash barriers around roadside electric poles to greatly reduce fatal impacts during severe motor vehicle collisions. Motorists must strictly maintain safe speed limits while driving small cars to ensure maximum control over unexpected steering wheel failures.
