Old Vehicles on Indian Roads
An old vehicle, overloaded with garbage, was moving along a city road in Uttar Pradesh. The vehicle had no proper body (dala) and was in extremely poor condition. It emitted so much pollution that it seemed like an old man struggling to keep pace with modern, younger vehicles. It was unfit for public roads, but the truck was still operational due to oversight and a lack of regulation.
A motorcycle rider, a man along with his wife and their daughter, was traveling behind the old Automobile. At a gap in the median, the Old Vehicles driver suddenly applied the brakes to stop the vehicle, due to which the vehicle dragged a few meters. The rider of the two-wheeler was unable to anticipate the sudden stop on the road and collided with the rear end, leading to a fatal accident of all.
This tragedy happened due to old Automobiles, poorly maintained Machines, such as buses and trucks, that continue to operate in several states across India, including metropolitan cities. Many of these vehicles are re-registered for an additional five years instead of Vehicle Scrappage policies. In the absence of Vehicle Scrappage rules and policies, these types of Machines not only danger road users but also contribute significantly to environmental pollution.
Despite the risks, these vehicles continue to ply on the Indian roads. However, when the consequences finally manifest, it will be much harder to find solutions.
Old Vehicles Re-Registration and Scrappage: A Growing Concern in India
- Automobiles older than 15 years are often re-registered in other states instead of scrapping policies and safety regulations.
- These vehicles continue to pollute and pose significant safety hazards on the road. Also Read https://odishatransport.gov.in/content/Renewal-of-Registration/1
Inter-State Vehicle Transfer:
- Older vehicles are sold to neighbouring states or rural areas for re-registration and use for an additional 5 years.
- They are re-registered with falsified or manipulated documents, bypassing emission and safety checks.
Benefits of Proper Vehicle Scrappage:
- Conserves natural resources by recycling materials from old vehicles.
- Reduces waste and minimizes environmental damage.
- Decreases pollution, leading to cleaner air and healthier cities #defensive driving
Consequences:
- Mechanical failures, such as brake malfunctions, increase road accidents and higher risk.
- More vehicles remain operational, exacerbating congestion on congested roads.
- Outdated technologies result in environmental damage and pollution, causing long-term harm.
- High emissions from outdated vehicles Increased Air Pollution
The old Automobiles must be scaped not to play on the road due to safety and environmental issues.
