A devastating road accident claimed the lives of three members of a family near Alakhnur village in Raibag taluk of Karnataka’s Belagavi district on February 18. The victims, who were travelling on a motorcycle, were reportedly crushed under a speeding lorry, leaving the local community in shock and grief.
The tragic incident highlights once again the growing concerns over road safety on inter-district highways, where heavy vehicles and two-wheelers frequently share narrow stretches of road.
Family Travelling to Jamkhandi Meets With Fatal Accident
According to police sources, the deceased have been identified as Gireppa Kundrali, his wife Manjula, and their young son Aradhya. The family was travelling from their native village in neighbouring Maharashtra toward Jamkhandi when the accident occurred near Alakhnur.
Preliminary reports suggest that the motorcycle came under a lorry during the journey, resulting in fatal injuries to all three riders. The impact of the collision was severe, and the victims died on the spot before any medical assistance could reach them.
Eyewitnesses described the accident as sudden and horrifying, with bystanders rushing to alert local authorities immediately after the crash.
Police Rush to Spot and Begin Investigation
Officers from the Harugeri Police Station promptly reached the accident site after receiving information about the incident. The police secured the area and initiated preliminary inquiries to understand how the mishap occurred.
Authorities stated that further investigation is underway to determine whether overspeeding, driver negligence, or poor road conditions contributed to the accident. A case has been officially registered, and officials are collecting statements from witnesses and examining the vehicles involved.
The bodies were later shifted for post-mortem procedures as part of the legal formalities.
Identification and Notification of Relatives
Police officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and inform extended family members and relatives of the victims. Local residents and community members gathered near the accident spot, expressing sorrow over the tragic loss of an entire family.
The incident has left both the victims’ native village in Maharashtra and people in the Raibag region mourning the sudden deaths.
Rising Concerns Over Highway Safety
Road accidents involving two-wheelers and heavy vehicles continue to pose a serious safety challenge across many parts of Karnataka and neighbouring states. Experts often point to factors such as speeding trucks, lack of protective infrastructure, and limited visibility during travel as major causes behind such fatal crashes.
Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to follow traffic rules strictly, maintain safe distances, and avoid risky overtaking, especially on highways where large commercial vehicles operate.
Safety advocates also stress the importance of wearing protective gear and ensuring cautious driving practices to reduce fatalities among two-wheeler riders.
Local Administration Urges Caution
Following the incident, local authorities appealed to commuters to exercise caution while travelling on busy roads connecting rural areas to towns. Police officials emphasized that awareness and adherence to road safety norms are essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Investigators are expected to submit a detailed report after completing the inquiry, which will determine accountability and further legal action.
Community Mourns Loss of Three Lives
The heartbreaking accident has deeply affected residents in the region, with many expressing condolences to the bereaved family. The loss of three lives in a single incident serves as a grim reminder of how unpredictable and dangerous road travel can be.
As investigations continue, authorities hope that stricter enforcement and increased awareness will help reduce such fatal incidents and ensure safer roads for all commuters.
