A devastating road accident in Nepal’s Gorkha district has claimed the lives of seven Indian pilgrims and left several others injured. The incident occurred on Monday evening as a group of devotees was returning from the revered Manakamana Temple.
Details of the Gorkha Microbus Crash
The victims were traveling in an electric microbus carrying 16 passengers, 14 of whom were Indian nationals. According to local police reports, the vehicle veered off the road at Kantar in the Shahid Lakhan Rural Municipality, plunging approximately 200 meters down a steep hillside. The deceased—comprising five men and two women—reportedly died on the spot. They had visited the hilltop shrine for worship and were on their journey back when the tragedy struck.
Rescue Operations and Injuries
Emergency teams successfully rescued seven other passengers from the wreckage. The survivors are currently receiving medical attention at two facilities:
- Ambukhaireni Hospital
- Old Medical College Hospital in Chitwan
While the driver of the microbus managed to escape the crash unhurt, his assistant sustained injuries and is among those being treated.
Ongoing Investigation
Nepalese authorities have launched a formal investigation into the crash. While the rugged terrain and narrow roads in the Gorkha region often present challenges, the exact cause of the accident remains unknown. Police are examining the vehicle’s mechanics and road conditions to determine what led to the fatal plunge.
This tragedy highlights the ongoing safety concerns for pilgrims navigating mountainous routes in the Himalayas.
Suggestion
Authorities should install high-quality crash barriers and reflective signage along steep, winding Himalayan roads to prevent fatal plunges. Drivers must undergo specialized mountain training and adhere to strict speed limits, especially when operating heavily loaded microbuses. Mandatory mechanical safety inspections for all commercial electric vehicles would ensure brakes and tires remain functional in rugged terrain.
