
A devastating vehicle accident in Nepal has claimed the lives of seven pilgrims from Tamil Nadu, while leaving seven others injured. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in the Gorkha district of Gandaki Province, as confirmed by state officials in Chennai on Sunday.
Tragedy in Route to Manakamana Temple
The victims were part of a larger travel group of 24 pilgrims hailing from Pollachi and Devakottai in Tamil Nadu. The group was traveling to visit the highly revered Manakamana Temple, a popular spiritual destination located in the Gorkha district, when their vehicle met with the fatal crash.
Victims Identified and Injured Hospitalized
Authorities have officially identified the seven deceased individuals as:
- Annamalai
- Vijayal
- Meenakshi
- Sivakami
- Muthu Kumar
- Meena
- Tamilarasi
Meanwhile, the seven injured passengers were immediately rushed to a local medical college hospital for urgent medical intervention and stabilization.
Government Rescue and Repatriation Efforts
In response to the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu State Government has launched swift, coordinated efforts to assist the affected families. Senior state officials are working closely with representatives from the Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Their primary focus is ensuring the injured receive proper medical care and are safely brought back home to India.
“After the autopsy, the bodies are being taken to Kathmandu, from where they will be sent to Chennai. Efforts are being made to transport the mortal remains to the native places of the deceased.” – Tamil Nadu State Government Release
Extensive arrangements are underway to repatriate the deceased. Following the necessary post-mortem examinations, the mortal remains are being transported to Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, before being airlifted directly to Chennai.
Once in Chennai, state authorities will facilitate the final transport of the mortal remains to their respective native towns, allowing grieving families to perform final rites. The government continues to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing the safe return of all survivors from this heartbreaking tragedy.

To prevent such tragedies, transport authorities must strictly enforce vehicle maintenance checks and regulate driver fatigue on hilly terrains. Additionally, installing high-quality crash barriers and improving road lighting in Gandaki Province can significantly reduce accident risks.
