Bhagalpur, Bihar: A devastating road accident on Tuesday evening claimed the lives of four individuals, including a six-year-old boy, and left eleven others injured in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. The fatal collision, which occurred around 6:30 PM, involved a speeding bus, a small commercial vehicle, and an e-rickshaw.
According to local officials, the tragic incident took place near Bagri Pul, located within the jurisdiction of the Jhandapur Police Station in the Naugachia subdivision. The accident happened on National Highway 31 (NH-31), a major route heavily utilized by commuters.
Casualties and Victim Identification
The severe Multi-Vehicle Collision resulted in immediate fatalities and significant injuries. Authorities have officially identified the deceased as:
Arvind Mandal, a resident of Katihar district.
Kunal Kumar, a resident of Khagaria district.
Purmi Devi and her husband, Sunil Das, both residents of Bhagalpur district.
The loss of life includes a six-year-old child and a woman, underscoring the severity of the multi-vehicle crash.
Medical Response and Current Status
Emergency response teams and local police arrived promptly at the scene upon receiving information about the crash. The injured victims were immediately evacuated and transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent care.
Bhagalpur District Magistrate (DM) Nawal Kishor Choudhary provided an update on the survivors, stating that eight of the eleven injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Bhagalpur. The remaining three victims have been treated and successfully discharged. The DM reassured the public that all the hospitalized individuals are now out of danger. Furthermore, the district administration is actively coordinating with regional officials to notify the families of the victims, including those residing outside the immediate Bhagalpur area.
Ongoing Investigation and Infrastructure Updates
Naugachia police district Superintendent of Police (SP) Prerna Kumar noted that preliminary investigations suggest the two smaller vehicles were struck by a speeding bus. Law enforcement officials confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) will be registered promptly. Authorities are actively working to identify both the driver and the owner of the bus to ensure strict legal action is taken.
Addressing public concerns about the frequency of accidents on this specific stretch of NH-31, DM Choudhary acknowledged the highway’s heavy traffic volume. He announced that the government has recently approved a proposal to widen the road, with construction slated to begin very soon. In the meantime, officials strongly urge all commuters to strictly adhere to safe driving practices.
Suggestion
To prevent the Bhagalpur accident, the bus driver should have avoided speeding and risky overtaking on the narrow NH-31, especially during low-visibility hours. The tragedy could have been averted if the highway had a physical divider to stop head-on collisions between heavy buses and smaller vehicles like e-rickshaws. Additionally, ensuring all commercial vehicles were fitted with speed governors and bright reflectors would have allowed for better control and visibility on the road.
