Goa has witnessed a 13% increase in fatal road accidents in 2025, reversing the earlier downward trend in fatalities. According to official reports, September alone recorded 17 fatal road accidents and 18 deaths, matching the figures from the same month last year.
While earlier quarters of 2025 showed promising declines, the sudden spike in recent months has raised serious concerns among law enforcement and citizens.
📅 Comparing Yearly Statistics
In the first quarter of 2025, Goa saw a 23% reduction in fatal accidents and a 25% drop in road deaths compared to 2024. However, by the third quarter, the momentum slowed:
- Fatal accidents were only 8% lower than last year.
- Deaths from road accidents dropped by 10%.
- A total of 190 fatal accidents were recorded till October 2025, compared to 207 during the same period in 2024.
- 196 people lost their lives this year, compared to 219 in 2024.
Despite a 10% overall reduction in total accidents (1,726 this year versus 1,935 last year), the rise in fatality rate indicates worsening accident severity.
🚗 Police Point to Rash Driving and Negligence
Police officials attribute the spike to rash and negligent driving by two and four-wheeler users, particularly on highways and busy urban stretches.
A senior officer stated that reduced on-ground enforcement due to certain government directives has weakened fear among motorists, leading to rule violations.
“Despite an initial decline, the upward trend in fatalities suggests that many drivers are ignoring safety norms. Without strict enforcement, accidents are bound to rise,” the officer added.
⚠️ Experts Warn of Returning to 2024 Levels
Authorities fear that if the trend continues, fatal accident figures could return to 2024 levels by year-end. The Goa Police has therefore set a target to reduce total accidents by 10% before 2025 ends.
Traffic experts are urging the government to:
- Reinforce traffic law enforcement,
- Install more speed-detection cameras,
- Launch public awareness drives on safe driving, and
- Ensure stricter penalties for repeat offenders.
