A devastating road accident on National Highway 16 near Uttara Chhak in Bhubaneswar claimed three lives early Monday morning. The fatal crash resulted in the tragic deaths of two local women out for a morning walk and a university student traveling inside the vehicle.
Details of the Fatal NH-16 Crash
The horrific incident occurred around 6:00 AM close to Uttara KEC College. According to eyewitness accounts, a speeding SUV allegedly traveling at speeds exceeding 150 km/h was heading from Bhubaneswar towards Puri when tragedy struck. The vehicle hit 53-year-old Bibilata Sahu and 36-year-old Rojalini Sahu, both residents of the Uttara area.
Following the high-speed impact with the pedestrians, the driver completely lost control. The SUV subsequently rammed into an electric pole, overturned violently, and plunged into a nearby roadside drain.
Casualties and Survivor’s Account
Both women died at the scene. Inside the severely damaged SUV were two students from a private university in the state capital. One of the students died on the spot, while the passenger, Himanshu Kumar, survived with injuries.
Speaking to local media, Kumar explained that the duo was traveling to the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri for darshan. He recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the crash, stating his friend lost control of the vehicle while he was distracted changing the music. “After the car rolled over, I tried breaking the glass to get out. Fortunately, locals came to my rescue,” Kumar stated.
Official Response
Shortly after the Bhubaneswar road accident, Pipili police and Fire Services personnel arrived at the location to conduct rescue operations and seize the wrecked SUV. Authorities are continuing their investigation into this tragic accident, which serves as a grim reminder of the fatal consequences of reckless speeding on highways.
Suggestion
Install automated speed cameras on NH-16 to strictly enforce speed limits and deter reckless driving. Drivers must stay focused on the road and actively avoid distractions like changing music. Authorities should build barricaded pedestrian pathways to safely separate morning walkers from highway traffic.
