Mumbai: A devastating accident occurred late Thursday night, February 27, 2026, claiming the life of a 35-year-old man in Wadala East. At approximately 12:55 AM, a massive 40-ton iron plate dislodged from a moving container truck and crushed an overtaking Maruti Ertiga beneath Mumbai’s Eastern Freeway, on the Sewri-Chembur Road near Khar Ganga Jal.
The victim, identified as Mohammed Jameer Hasanuddin Siddiqui, a resident of Mohammed Estate near the BKC fire brigade, was driving the Ertiga and died instantly from catastrophic injuries.
The Incident and Rescue Operations
According to eyewitnesses, the Accident unfolded on a poorly lit, pothole-riddled stretch of the road, a route heavily frequented by commercial transport vehicles traveling from the nearby port. As Siddiqui attempted to overtake the container truck, its enormous cargo unexpectedly shifted and plummeted directly onto his vehicle.
The sheer weight of the 40-ton iron plate completely flattened the car, trapping the driver inside. Emergency responders, including local police and heavy machinery operators, were immediately dispatched to the chaotic scene. The recovery operation took several hours, requiring the deployment of heavy-duty cranes and a poclain machine to lift the immense load. Once extricated, Siddiqui’s badly mangled body was transported to KEM Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police Investigation and Action
Following the incident, the Wadala Police swiftly launched an investigation and registered a First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections for causing death by negligence. Although the driver of the container truck initially fled the scene, he was soon taken into police custody for interrogation. The transport firm, based in Thane, cooperated fully with authorities by providing the driver’s details.
Investigators are currently focusing on whether the oversized cargo was improperly secured. They suspect that the uneven, potholed road surface may have violently jarred the chains holding the heavy iron plate, causing them to fail.
Key Investigation Details:
Cargo Route: The truck was transporting the iron plate from the Mumbai Port to a manufacturing facility in Surat.
Potential Causes: Improper securing of the load, exacerbated by severe potholes on the route.
Evidence Gathering: Authorities are actively reviewing local CCTV footage and gathering statements from witnesses to identify any lapses in mandatory safety protocols for oversized cargo.
Suggestion
Authorities must enforce strict pre-transit inspections and mandate heavy-duty tie-downs for all oversized cargo. Repairing potholed roads and improving lighting will prevent load shifts and enhance safety for smaller vehicles.
