A weekend getaway turned into a devastating tragedy for a group of students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela. While travelling to the picturesque Khandadhar waterfall, a severe head-on collision on National Highway 143 claimed the life of one student and left a female co-rider with critical injuries.
Fatal Collision Near Samar Dari Chhak
The heartbreaking incident occurred near Samar Dari Chhak when sixteen NIT Rourkela students were riding on scooters towards the popular tourist destination. According to reports, a speeding truck crashed head-on into one of the two-wheelers. The impact was fatal for the scooter rider, identified as Kartiken, who tragically died on the spot. His female pillion rider sustained severe injuries during the violent crash.
Immediate Rescue and Medical Response
Following the horrific crash, panic ensued among the fellow students, who immediately contacted local authorities. The severely injured female co-rider was first rushed to the Lahuniapada Medical Centre for emergency primary treatment. Due to the critical nature of her injuries, attending doctors promptly referred her to a specialized hospital in Rourkela for advanced medical care. Meanwhile, personnel from the Lahuniapada police station arrived swiftly at the accident site to manage the chaotic scene.
Police Investigation and Road Safety Concerns
To aid their inquiry, law enforcement officials have seized both the speeding truck and the damaged scooter involved in the tragic accident. Authorities confirmed that a thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances and sequence of events that led to the crash. This devastating loss has once again sparked serious concerns regarding highway road safety, highlighting the extreme risks faced by young students travelling on busy national routes.
