On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, a devastating hit-and-run accident near Perumbakkam resulted in the tragic deaths of a 35-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter. The fatal incident has not only shattered a family but also sparked outrage among local residents regarding the worsening traffic safety conditions on key arterial roads.
How the Fatal Accident Unfolded
According to statements from the Tambaram police, the victims were identified as Lavanya and her teenage daughter, Iniya. On Tuesday morning, Lavanya was driving her two-wheeler to drop Iniya at her school located in nearby Medavakkam.
While navigating the commute along Nookampalayam Main Road, their scooter unexpectedly struck a speed breaker. The sudden impact caused both the mother and daughter to lose their balance and fall onto the roadway. Tragically, a heavy truck traveling closely from behind ran over them before they could recover. Both victims sustained severe injuries and were killed on the spot.
Police Investigation and Manhunt for the Driver
Immediately following the collision, the driver of the truck abandoned the heavy vehicle on the road and fled the scene to evade arrest. The Pallikaranai Traffic Investigation Police promptly arrived at the accident spot to secure the area and gather evidence. Authorities recovered the victims’ bodies and transported them to the Government Chromepet Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Law enforcement officials have since launched a rigorous manhunt to track down and apprehend the absconding truck driver.
Locals Highlight Severe Traffic Safety Concerns
This heartbreaking Perumbakkam road accident has brought long-standing safety issues to the forefront. A resident living in a multi-storey apartment complex near the crash site expressed deep frustration over systemic traffic violations. Although Nookampalayam Main Road is officially designated as a one-way route, motorists frequently travel in both directions, directly contributing to a high rate of vehicular accidents.
Additionally, stray cattle roaming freely across the street exacerbate the daily hazards faced by commuters. In light of the tragedy, local citizens are demanding immediate action, specifically urging authorities to completely ban heavy commercial vehicles from passing through this densely populated residential zone.
Official Response and Traffic Interventions
Responding to the growing public outcry, a senior official representing the Tambaram Police Commissionerate addressed the community’s urgent safety demands. The official confirmed that immediate steps are being taken to prevent future tragedies. Moving forward, a dedicated traffic police constable will be deployed on Nookampalayam Main Road during peak hours to enforce one-way rules, manage the flow of vehicles, and ensure pedestrian safety.
Suggestion
Authorities must enforce strict one-way traffic rules to stop vehicles from traveling in the wrong direction. Installing visible warning signs before speed breakers will help two-wheeler riders slow down safely. Heavy commercial trucks should be permanently banned from entering narrow residential roads during school commute hours.
